Crochet in paintings

I have always loved  paintings of women crafting This painting is by Mary Cassatt. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women. I love this picture it sums up to me ,my idea of the perfect day. Sitting outside crocheting away
I am very lucky to have been blessed with two daughters who both love crochet, knitting, so this second picture brings back such beautiful memories . I love the emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children and learning at mothers knee's. I learnt to sew in exactly the same way and so did they.

This painting is by Edward Thompson Davis 1833-1867 .It is called The Crochet Lesson
Giovanni Boldini's Young Woman Crocheting

Bet, this photo makes you laugh?

If you google you will find  the most fascinating paintings of women sewing, throughout the centuries. Young or old, rich or poor, women have always knitted, crocheted, sewed, weaved cloth or spun wool. It is a connection between most women, passed down mother to daughter . I love that  women are taking an interest again, rediscovering the joy of creating something out of nothing. I crochet for that very reason. All these images evoke a sense of peace and serenity.

  1. Wonderful post! I love Cassatt - she was born near where I I grew up! I'm going to see if I can get prints of some of these works, they'd be a beautiful addition to a craft room! Thanks for sharing, Chrissie x

  9. You have put a lovely collection of paintings together.
Art was never my thing, but as I've got older, I've realised that we are not expected to love everything we see in a gallery and now I really appreciate the pieces that I do like and take in all of the detail.
